Empowering Historical Narratives

Discover the lives and legacies of those aboard the Titanic Countess of Rothes, Lucy Noël Martha Dyer-Edwards, was a British aristocrat and a first-class passenger on the Titanic. She became known for her heroic  actions during the disaster.

Her Role During the Sinking:

When the Titanic struck the iceberg, the Countess helped organize and reassure other passengers.

She was placed in Lifeboat 8, along with her maid and others.

Rather than remaining passive, she took control of the tiller and helped row the lifeboat throughout the night.

She provided comfort and leadership, particularly assisting the crewman in charge, Able Seaman Thomas Jones, who later praised her courage and determination.

After the Disaster:

She was rescued by the Carpathia and later continued her work helping Titanic survivors.

She remained in contact with Thomas Jones, who called her "more of a man than any we had on board."

Legacy:

The Countess of Rothes is remembered as one of the unsung heroes of the Titanic tragedy.

Her lifeboat leadership and bravery are often highlighted in survivor accounts.
